Flashback Central: Review of The Vampire Diaries 2.04: “Memory Lane”

By Carla Lee

To start, I want to say that I am intrigued by the fact that the moonstone belonged to Mason’s mother, but since it’s so explicit that the werewolf curse passes through the Lockwood line, I doubt we’re actually going to see any female werewolves.

I want to know why not. Why do the men get to have all the fun?

(Yes, I realize that Mason would argue that being a werewolf isn’t fun at all, but still.)…

A Howling Good Time: A Review of The Vampire Diaries 2.03: “Bad Moon Rising”

By Carla Lee

[spoilers ahead]

This episode seems custom-made for me, combining a road trip for supernatural research and werewolves with a title which made me grin. Sadly, the song never showed up in the episode. Maybe it was too much of a callback to other werewolf stories and to Supernatural‘s use of it during a season finale. Happily, and probably coincidently, it aired in a week with not only a full moon, but a gorgeous harvest moon. Good …

Mystic Falls High School Annual Carnival

Oh, Mystic Falls, why so many events? And didn’t Vicki die at this same carnival? Has it really been a year? I have such difficulty following time of year in Mystic Falls, possibly because they have similar town events every other week.

Still, a carnival is a fantastic setting for horror. Though I enjoyed the dark atmosphere this episode provided, I don’t think they went far enough with it; …

Photos of Jane Badler have emerged. For her grand appearance as the mother of Anna, she is wearing a red dress, which harks back to the original unforms of the aliens. There is also a recent interview with Jane where she talks about how she fought to get this role: http://www.seattlepi.com/tvguide/426608_tvgif13.html

Top Five Things to Love About The Vampire Diaries Season One (and a Few Things to Hate)

5. Mood

Mystic Falls is deliciously gray and foggy and creepy. Sometimes, the music is a little ridiculous and takes away from the overall tone of the show, but there are some lovely melancholy or dangerous moments. Early episodes did a nice job of creating mini-horror movies in opening scenes, even if those scenes were fairly stereotypical (damsel in distress, …

Lies and Lying Liars: Review of The Vampire Diaries 2.1: “The Return”

By Carla Lee

[spoilers ahead]

After a summer of anticipation, season two starts where season one ended, with Katherine-as-Elena’s scene with Jon, and I am pleased. I dislike his character so much, I was happy with a second chance to see Katherine cut off his fingers and stab him. Then it got even better! Elena rushes to Jon’s side, despite how he feels about her, and we get the first of many beautiful scenes in which Katherine lurks just behind …

Vampire Thursdays: Bloody Funny: Vampires and Comedy

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Welcome to another Vampire Thursday, as we explore the world of the undead this September.

Everything that was scary will eventually be funny. One need look no further than zombie movies to see that parody and humour eventually seep into horror. Vampires, by the virtue of being one of the oldest monsters to make it into cinemas, have a long history of being funny.

Early examples of vampires and humour come courtesy of the Abott and Costello …

John May may not be dead. Executive producer Scott Rosenbaum said Michael Trucco’s character may return next season. Good, because that was a lame death (and a lame leader, to boot).
