Monster Byte: Video Witness Deepens Mystery Surrounding Gang Death

by Paula R. Stiles

Innsmouth, MA: The mystery surrounding the attack last month on actor Peter McCallister, star of local production Tentacles from the Sea 3D, and the strange deaths of his alleged assailants, Hermann Krahen, Friedrich Krahen and Greg Hasler, deepened with the recovery of a video camera previously gone missing from the set.

“We found the camera half-buried in the sand not far from the site of Mr. McCallister’s attack,” said Officer Sandra Lewiston, who has been …

Review: In the Hunt: Unauthorized Essays on Supernatural

By Paula R. Stiles

In the Hunt: Unauthorized Essays on Supernatural. Supernatural.tv with Leah Wilson, ed. Dallas: BenBella Books, Inc., 2009. xvi, 275pp. US $14.95/CAN $17.50. ISBN: 978-1-933771-63-2.

In the Hunt came out last spring and it’s already a bit obsolete. The publisher even admits this in the preface by noting that the forward by Keith R.A. DeCandido, introduction by Supernatural.tv and 22 essays were all written between seasons three and four of the show (interestingly, 18 out of …

Review: Supernatural: John Winchester’s Journal

Review by Paula R. Stiles

Irvine, Alex. Supernatural: John Winchester’s Journal. Dan Panosian and Alex Irvine, illus. New York: Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. (William Morrow), 2009. 218pp. US $21.99 (hardbound). ISBN: 978-0-06-170662-2.

I didn’t expect to like Supernatural: John Winchester’s Journal, even though I enjoyed Irvine’s previous tie-in, The Supernatural Book of Monsters, Spirits, Demons, and Ghouls. Despite his being played by an excellent actor (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Winchester patriarch John was not my favorite Supernatural character …

Issue 11 of Supernatural Magazine came out last week (July 28 in the U.S./Canada; August 13 in the UK). It’s a bimonthly ‘zine, so that’s not quite two years it’s been running. All of the major genre shows have their own official magazines now, even the mainstream likes of Grey’s Anatomy. So, in that sense, …

I was going to say that Supernatural: Bone Key was probably the closest we could expect to get to a good bit of official Supernatural fiction until I got hold of John Winchester’s Journal, which really is a good bit of official Supernatural fiction.

That said, Bone Key is …

Monster Byte: Bodies Found on Devil Reef Were Members of Local Gang

by Paula R. Stiles

Innsmouth, MA – Three bodies were found on Devil Reef on Thursday, only days after an attack put actor Peter McCallister in the hospital. Though all three were badly mangled, two of them have been tentatively identified as Hermann Krahen (20) and his younger brother Friedrich (17). The third is believed to be Hermann’s friend Greg Hasler (19). All three were reputed members of the local gang, the Lichens, suspected of setting the wildfire currently scorching …

Supernatural: Witch’s Canyon works better as a straight-up horror novel than a Supernatural tie-in novel. There are tons of gore and a generally cold, grim and fatalistic atmosphere. Lots and lots of secondary characters die, some of them before we get properly acquainted with them. The plot is clearly spelled out and the …

Monster Byte: Actor Attacked and Left for Dead on Beach

by Paula R. Stiles

Innsmouth, MA – Summer film production Tentacles from the Sea 3D experienced yet another setback yesterday when the film’s star, Peter McCallister, was found bleeding and half-drowned on the beach across from Devil Reef. He was taken to Innsmouth General Hospital and held overnight for observation. Police suspect that he was assaulted in the course of a robbery.

“Guess he shouldn’t have fought back,” part-time deputy for Innsmouth PD, and building manager for New Church Green, …

Don’t believe the snobs. Novelizations of television series and films can be just as good as any other literature (Paradise Lost is unabashed biblefic by a Lucifer fanboy, when it comes right down to it). By that token, they can be pretty bad, too.

The recipe to a good novelization, as far …

TV Review: Warehouse 13

by Paula R. Stiles

You know something’s not so great when the written promotion for a show sounds intriguing and the previews suck. You could tell Warehouse 13, a series about two FBI agents reassigned to a warehouse of cursed objects in South Dakota, was supposed to be Indiana-Jonesish, not just from the promotion but from the scheduling of National Treasure right before it and The Mummy a few days later.

If this were National Treasure or The Mummy

Season three of Supernatural was decidedly messy (and short by six episodes), what with the Writers Strike. Yet, Supernatural: The Official Companion Season 3 is my favorite of the three season companions for the show so far.

It’s not the format, so much, which is the same …
