Review: War of the Worlds: (1988) 1.14: Feedeth Among the Lilies

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

A nasty opening for an episode: aliens performing a live dissection on a human. But the radiation spoils them too quickly. Perhaps they can perform their experiments outside their base camp, where the bodies would remain in good shape longer. The aliens take over the bodies of two paramedics so they can attempt mobile surgeries.

Meanwhile, Blackwood’s team is doing research, talking to people who say they’ve been abducted by aliens. The descriptions of the abductions are …

Review: War of the Worlds: (1988) 1.13: Dust to Dust

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

I don’t generally like stories of aliens that magically give native cultures their technology. It’s pretty insulting to handwave the accomplishments of civilizations such as the Maya or the Inca by saying some dude from the stars granted them their astronomical and mathematical knowledge. You don’t see people claiming that the Brits could build castles because a starman descended and told them how to pile rocks together.

Thus, I am pretty divided on this episode. On the …

ABC has downsized its second V season to only ten episodes, down from 13, Deadline reported. This has spurred comments among fans who think the show will not live to see a third season. Considering the almost manic way the show has been handled until now, I wouldn’t be …

Review: War of the Worlds (1988) 1.10: Epiphany

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Is there something scarier than evil nuns? If you say “no”, then you didn’t attend Catholic school. This episode opens with stony-faced nuns watching a boy being bullied and an elderly woman getting her purse stolen. The aliens conclude that humans are rotten bastards and will kill each other through ‘tribal’ conflict, but they are not willing to wait sitting pretty until that happens.

Meanwhile, the heroes watch the news and learn about an upcoming disarmament conference …

Review: War of the Worlds (1988) 1.09: The Good Samaritan

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Tainted soup! Tainted grain! A sleazy, three (or is it four?) – timing CEO! Scaaaary moustache! Unfortunately, it sounds more exciting than it really is because this episode is very meh. It’s not bad; it’s not good. It’s just a bit slow, contains almost zero gore and ultimately leaves you feeling little one way or the other.

It opens effectively, at a diner where four people are served chicken soup, which is laced by the aliens in …

Review: War of the Worlds (1988) 1.08: To Heal the Leper

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

[spoilers ahoy]

Here is the good news: this episode is about brain-snatching. Here’s the bad news: it’s dull and the special effects suck. Now, you’re going to say, “Silvia, what did you expect? They had no CGI!” I do understand the budget and period limitations of this series, but never before did the effects look this awful. The bouncy rubber brains were hilarious!

We open at a morgue, with an attendant horrified to discover dozens of mangled …

Review: War of the Worlds (1988) 1.07: “My Name is Goliath”

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Note: Due to assorted technical problems, this review has no photos. Sorry!

This episode is not great, but it’s fun and it’s geeky, and that deserves a pat on the back. It does what the show seems to do best, which is to pick a good, yet inexpensive, setting and then runs with it. In this case: tunnels. There’s probably nothing cheaper than a dark, wet tunnel with flashlights revealing some awful sight.

The tunnels are located …
