Review: V 2.01: Red Rain

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

[spoiler alert]

V has returned. After the show limped through the last season, how does the opening of the second season fare? Better than the first, fortunately, but there’s something that still feels off about it. To be frank, this show does not have the epic, intense feel of Battlestar Galactica, but it doesn’t feel very fun either. However, it has improved by leaps and bounds compared to its flabby previous episodes. I guess that’s good? …

Review: War of the Worlds (1988) 1.19: Vengeance Is Mine

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

It’s fitting that my final review of War of the Worlds (for 2010 and at least for a while, since V is returning to ABC in a couple of weeks) should focus on Ironhorse, my favourite character. It deals with a hostage situation-gone-wrong: a human gets killed and Ironhorse replays the experience over and over again.

He’s a soldier, but for some reason, that incident has a deep impact on him. Maybe it has to do with …

Review: War of the Worlds (1988) 1.18: The Last Supper

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

This is going to be one short review. How short? I can do it in haiku form:

In winter
Silvia saw much flashback
no plot, alas WoW

This episode is set in Philadelphia, where our heroes are gathering for a top-notch secret meeting of world-wide delegates to talk about alien activity. This is just an excuse to flashback to previous episodes. Aha.

While it’s nice to see that there are aliens outside the United States, the meeting …

Spoilers are limited to some pictures and promotional materials. Not much you haven’t seen before.

The most interesting photos circulating the Internet were images of Jane Badler, against a green screen, emerging from a cocoon. Oddly enough, she is fully dressed. Not that I’m demanding that Mrs. Badler get …

Review: War of the Worlds: (1988) 1.18: Unto Us a Child is Born

by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

This episode is creepy. I mean, any episode with a pregnant woman has the potential to be pretty frakking scary. Our pregnant protagonist’s body is hijacked by an alien on the run who is in desperate need of a body. Things become a little complicated because, just after stealing the body, the alien begins to feel labour pains. You know it’s going to get interesting when, as she is being wheeled into the hospital, a nurse says …

Review: War of the Worlds: (1988) 1.17: The Meek Shall Inherit

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

I must admit I wasn’t thrilled with this episode. Scratch that, I was bored. It starts with some workers interfering with the phone lines, sending a signal so powerful it melts telephones and explodes a phone booth. The aliens are experimenting with disruptive communications tactics. Yes, the loss of phones will send humanity into a death spiral.

The episode demonstrates its age by its focus on technology. I guess nowadays, they might try to interfere with the …

Review: War of the Worlds: (1988) 1.15: The Prodigal Son

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

A police car with three men in it (Aha! Aliens!) is following a man. The man evades them. Who is this mysterious figure? Why, it’s Quinn. Coincidentally, Harrison Blackwood has been invited to meet the reclusive artist Quinn in New York. He also has a briefing with the United Nations Security Council in two days, but Harrison promises to return from New York in time.

Harrison chats with Quinn, who says he derives his inspiration from the …
