Interview: Jane Badler

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Bad, mad and dangerous to know. That was Diana, the alien villain from V. Jane Badler, the woman behind Diana, is significantly more pleasant. An American who has called Australia her home for the past couple of decades, Badler has appeared in numerous TV shows like Mission Impossible and Falcon Crest. Nowadays, she sings (nicely; she has a very pleasant voice) and continues to appear on television (most recently in the Australian soap opera Neighbours

Review: War of the Worlds (1988): 1.01

by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

I’m not done with aliens that want to dominate Earth. Hopefully, neither are you. While V is on hiatus I’m sitting down to review War of the Worlds. If you’re old enough to remember watching it, this was a two-season show that explored the idea of the aliens from War of the Worlds trying to take over the planet once again several decades after their first failed attempt at world domination.

The first episode opens with a …

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of the Original V TV Series

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

After gorging on V for the past few months, I have concluded that between the two mini-series and the TV show, the second mini-series is my favourite. V just seemed better suited for a mini-series format. Nevertheless, it was so successful, it spawned a TV show. How did that show do?

Cheap

Cutting corners was a specialty of the TV show. It’s not like other shows haven’t done it. Star Trek was careful to shoot one show …

And Now, The Thrilling Conclusion: Review: V (1984) 1.19: “The Return”

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

This is the last episode of V. Next week I’ll summarize my thoughts on the 1980s show and then we’ll move on to another alien invasion show: War of the Worlds.

V opens with the heroes facing impending doom. They are about to be captured and Elizabeth has lost her powers, so she can’t help them. We are told Elizabeth has lost her powers, we don’t see it. Show, not tell, once again, is a …

It’s Sacrifice Day: Review: V (1984) 1.18: The Secret Underground

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

What potentially offers the opportunity of plenty of fun, quickly turns sour due to an inordinate number of silly flashbacks in this episode. How V manages to ruin a perfect setup every time a member of the Resistance walks in front of the camera, I’ll never know, but they have an uncanny ability to accomplish this feat.

A group of V prisoners arrives on the mothership. They carry important information: names of Resistance leaders. Jonathan, a Fifth …

This is Me Being Disillusioned: Review: V (1984) 1.17: “War of Illusions”

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

I must admit this was a lousy episode. Bland, with an annoying guest character, and with more than the usual dose of re-used footage. Plus, the tacky and cheap special effects never looked worse than when the “battlesphere” turned out to be a plasma ball. This would have been fine in a Universal black-and-white movie. Not in 1984.

The episode opens with a substantial promise of camp. Diana and a recurring character, Lieutenant James, are in bed …

It’s an Egg-tastic Episode: Review: V (1984) 1.16: “The Littlest Dragon”

By Silvia Moreno-Garcia

I’m beginning to think this is a show about the frustrations of an employee against middle management. At least, it seems like that for poor Diana, who keeps getting a new supervisor to cramp her style (Lydia, Charles, Philip) and is constantly resorting to murder instead of phoning Human Resources. I think we can all commiserate.

Despite the stupid title, this is the most cohesive episode of the series yet. Many episodes are disjointed, with the Resistance …
