About
Innsmouth Free Press is a fictional newspaper publishing faux news pieces – lovingly called Monster Bytes – in a Lovecraftian/Cthulhu Mythos universe, as well as original short fiction stories. We also feature some of Lovecraft’s classic tales.
Innsmouth Free Press is a collaborative effort. We want readers and writers to help us map out and flesh out Innsmouth and the surrounding area, and to do it in epistolary form through news stories, opinion pieces, lifestyles articles, which blur the boundaries between fantasy and reality. Metafiction, if you will.
We also seek to publish short fiction inspired by Lovecraft’s writing, especially fiction that explores interesting, novel settings and characters juxtaposed with Lovecraft’s original fiction.
Our aim at Innsmouth Free Press is not to keep a static website that is updated with fiction every few months, but to maintain a breathing, energetic publication which evolves with help from the user; a publication where fiction does not take the shape of a self-contained short story.
In short, we’d love it if you would join us in this virtual playground. Many of Innsmouth’s streets and locations remain unmapped. Help us discover what lies in the shadows.
FAQ
1. I don’t get it. What is this e-zine about again?
Did you check our detailed Mission Statement. Are you still confused?
OK, here’s the deal. Think of Innsmouth Free Press as a shared universe. You write a news story about the mysterious stuff happening over at the Pickman Art Gallery and we post it. Somebody writes another story about the creepy suicide of the cemetery caretaker. Together we build a constant epistolary narrative.
We call these epistolary documents the Monster Bytes. They’re unpaid, but it’s the easiest way to get published with us.
2. But you also mentioned something about paid fiction?
Ah, yes. We buy short fiction stories of less than 5,000 words. These stories don’t have to be epistolary narratives and they don’t have to be set in Innsmouth. Check the submission guidelines.
3. So can we use the places in your Walking Guide to Innsmouth in our Monster Bytes or short fiction stories?
Please do! That’s exactly what we want. We’d like you to help us map the city of Innsmouth.
4. Who is involved with this project?
Our publisher is Silvia Moreno-Garcia. The Editor-In-Chief is Paula R.Stiles. Our Field Correspondent is Amanda J. Spedding.
5. Where are you located?
We are a Canadian zine but welcome people from all over the world to join us. Amanda hails from Australia and Paula is from the United States, so we are an eclectic bunch.
We can always use more Monster Byte writers, so don’t be shy and start sending us stuff.
6. Hey, that explains the weird spelling on this website.
Yep. We use Canadian spelling based on the Canadian Press Stylebook. Don’t worry. Just spell the way you usually do and we’ll worry about making sure grey is spelled with an e.
7. Can I advertise with you?
