Monster Byte: New Year’s Miracle Reunites Reef Tragedy Families, Correction

By David Nickle

In the January 1st edition of The Innsmouth Free Press (”New Year’s Miracle Reunites Reef Tragedy Families”, p. 4), it was erroneously reported that Sam Trotter, Jacob Wellesley, and his sons Jebediah and Jonathan attended the Out With The ‘Oughts celebration at the Siren on December 31.

In fact, Sam Trotter’s lobster boat was lost with all hands off Devil Reef on March 9, 2009. Sam, Jacob, Jebediah, and Jonathan were all presumed drowned and the Coast Guard officially abandoned search and rescue operations March 15. Funeral services were held March 20.

Two photographs were published along with the article: one, appearing to show Sam Trotter dancing close with his former fiancée, Haephasia Bunt; and a second, representing the deceased Wellesley men tightly embracing the surviving Wellesley boy, Jeffrey.

Both images appear to have been manipulated. The editors have suspended Weekend Community Correspondent, Obediah Lomack, until an investigation into the matter is complete.

We regret any pain that the error may have caused the loved ones of the victims of the Reef Tragedy, and pray with them that the dead may finally rest eternally in 2010.
