Syfy has announced that the next season of Being Human has begun filming. In the process, they dropped some spoilers, one of them pretty major. Looks like Aidan gets out of being buried alive in the season finale to find the vampire world in a mess. Sally’s still in Limbo (no time jump this season, I guess). And yet another person with an axe to grind comes after Josh and Nora. Wait, you say. Wasn’t Nora’s fate in doubt at the end of last season? Yes, it was, but doubt no more, since they’re reporting that the actress, Kristen Hager, will be a regular in season three. As gleeful as I am to see Nora return and get a bigger role, I can’t help facepalming at the way Syfy casually dropped a massive character spoiler like that in there. You stay classy, Syfy.
Aside from Being Human, this week, we have spoilers for Doctor Who and Supernatural:
Doctor Who (Saturday nights, 9pm, BBC America)
By Heather S. Vina
The Official Doctor Who BBC site is releasing three pictures of Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman in character as the Doctor and new companion Clara, on their site. The first two are here and here. The third one was released today.
According to Matt Smith, “It [filming the new season] is going well. Jenna brings a really different energy to the show – one which I think is very interesting.”
DoctorWhoTV site has some spoilers summarised from Stephen Moffat’s interview in the latest Doctor Who Magazine here. This one is interesting, for those worried about Amy and Rory being killed off: “Rory and Amy are no longer regular travelers with the Doctor: ‘If he thinks he needs them, he just pops in on them,’ but, ‘Each time they’ll get a little older.’”
I think if they are going to kill them off – and I hope they don’t – I could handle it being more along the lines of the Doctor going to see them and ending up in a time where they passed away from old age, rather then killing them off young in the middle of an adventure with him or something. I just don’t want to see a companion die in their youth. I mean, it was sad when they had the Doctor try to call the Brigadier, only to find out he had reached him at a time when he had passed away. But at least we knew the Brigadier had lived a long and good life, and had died at an old age. So, it was sad, but not heartbreakingly so, as when Adric died in his youth on an adventure with the Doctor.
So, fingers crossed that, if they do “kill off” Amy and Rory, it won’t be a heartbreaking death.
Regarding Jenna-Louise’s Companion: “Jenna-Louise’s companion will be different to the others and is ‘going to be a shock.’” After one of the Doctor’s Companions ending up being the daughter of another Companion, not sure how much more “shocking” he can get!
And finally, the Doctor Who News site has up some pictures of Matt and Jenna-Louise on location at Margam Country Park. There are also pictures of people dressed in Victorian costumes, and Matt against a “green screen”. In another set of location filming pictures, it seems Karen Gillian and Arthur Darvill are on location, along with Matt Smith and a person appearing to be dressed in an Ood costume. According to the site, “Officially completed filming in May but were back for interior pickups for their last episode.”
You can find all of those pictures, and a few more, on this page. Just click on the “reveal” buttons to open up the pictures!
Supernatural (Friday nights, 9pm, CW)
By Paula R. Stiles
Jim Michaels confirmed that Jensen Ackles will be directing episode three (#152) again this season, even though it will be the first one produced (Ackles’ previous directed episode, “The Girl Next Door”, reruns this Friday). I’m guessing that means the premiere will be Dean-heavy and they’d rather not make one of their leads’ heads explode before the end of the summer. Filming starts July 9.
The lineup for Comic-Con is out. It includes new showrunner Jeremy Carver (still listed as Executive Producer of Being Human, though no longer a showrunner there), Ben Edlund, Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, Jim Beaver, and Mark Sheppard. No idea what that means for the upcoming season’s storylines. The panel will be on Sunday, July 15, as usual. And it will be in the dreaded Hall H. Again.
Supernatural was #10 on a list of most pirated shows in the U.S. This may not seem like much, except that #1 was Game of Thrones and every one of the other shows had huge buzz. Looks like Supernatural‘s late-blooming again. It’s like a phoenix that way.
Rick Worthy dropped a few spoilers about season eight in a new interview. Apparently, there’s a mystery concerning the Alpha’s true name (Bet it’s Egyptian). He also hinted at the possibility of an alliance against a mutual and greater foe.
The season seven DVD is available for pre-order on Amazon, out September 18.
It’s not spoilery, but Jared Padalecki did a new interview with his son for Father’s Day.
Late edit: Forgot to mention these, but they appear to be new show promo shots. Just Jensen Ackles, so far. Annnd here’s a closeup. If that jacket looks familiar, it looks to be the same as the red jacket Dean went to Purgatory in, now completely black. Maybe that’s what happened to it while he was there. As I said in one of the reviews a month or so back, colour of jackets has been used to indicate character mood and morality (specifically, Meg’s in season one) on the show in the past.
Finally, repeat ratings for “Hello Cruel World” were a 0.3/1 in the demo and 650 thousand in audience. Rumour has it that the show was preempted in Chicago for a baseball game.
We’ll be back next week with more spoilers. Stay tuned and check out our reviews of Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Event, Once Upon a Time, Grimm, and Supernatural.

Hard to believe- we still have four long months of hiatus. I hope Carver adopts a different spoiler policy because, man, that’s a really long time…
Thank goodness Comic Con is coming up so at least we’ll get some spoilers that way. If they start filming on the 9th, then unfortunately, we won’t see a clip this year. Too bad, that’s always one of the big highlights.
@Paula, just curious- why is it the “dreaded Hall H”?
The Worthy interview was interesting. It sounds like the writers talked to him about a whole backstory for the alpha vamp and some possible hints about the upcoming mytharc. With that much set up, it kind of makes me wonder if the character might be recurring next season. I thought Rick did a great job with the role so I’d love to see him back. I just hope the writers keep the alpha more on the mysterious, creepy side ala “Family Matters” and not so much the version we saw in “Bleed.” I’m also crossing my fingers they don’t forget the whole “Dean killed his mother” plot point. It’d be a major fail on the show’s part if that didn’t come up again and enter into the Dean-alpha dynamics in some way.
One more bit of news for SPN:
SPN, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins are up as nominees in the 2012 Portal Awards, against such biggies as Game of Thrones and Dr. Who. I don’t really know what these awards are, but voting starts on June 25th.
Here’s a link to the nominations article:
http://www.airlockalpha.com/node/9194/game-of-thrones-leads-portal-awards-with-9-nods.html
Well, Heather’s been there, so she would know better, but from what I’ve heard, Hall H is huge and the sound isn’t the best. Plus, the line to get in takes forever.
Note the Late Edit. I saw it before, but I forgot to put it in. While promo shots are always a tad iffy, if those shots are showing what I think they are (i.e. Jensen Ackles in a crappy, urban jungle room in a red leather jacket that’s been turned black=Dean after a while in Purgatory), they give some fairly significant character spoilers to chew on for Dean.
I really hope you are right, Paula. I mean with the first few episodes being Dean heavy. Who am I kidding I’d love a whole Dean heavy season. With lots of brother moments and Cas moments as well though. That would be great Also, if you are right with your idea that the colour of the jacket might hint to some Dean character spoilers (I remember when you talked about how Megs different coloured jackets indicated her “state of mind” or “evilness”)that would in fact be pretty cool as well. I guess dark jacket translates to dark Dean? Always loved to see a dark Dean. I’m continuing to be excited for season 8.
It’s not exactly the same model of jacket (There’s a label on the black one that’s not on the red one), but there are several features on it that seem intended to show similarities. Of course, with promo shoots, they often use clothing and other elements that don’t appear in the show, but I do think it’s very interesting that we have an early shoot with Ackles alone, in a setting that looks very Purgatory-ish (Somebody watched The Blair Witch Project recently), in a jacket that looks like a blackened version of the one in which he entered that realm.
By the way, he did not go to Purgatory unarmed. For a start, he had a machete on his hip. And I’m sure he had his usual assortment of guns and knives.
Hope he has Ruby’s knife with him! That can kill anything!
No, it only kills demons, so it would do him little good in Purgatory.
I was so happy when I remembered that Dean had put the machete back in his inside jacket pocket thingy! Thank goodness that boy has a big knife, cause he’s gonna need it!
I do wonder if he can die there. He did go there alive, but can a human die in Purgatory? The monsters never die, but can Dean? That’s why I hope they explore Purgatory some, there are so many interesting possibilities!
Are we sure these pics are from season 8? I read a site that has them labelled as season 7 promo pics, but no one seems to have an actual source for them. But oh how I hope your speculation is right. Because one of the painful things about season 6 & 7 is that nothing had any real meaning that lasted. And your scenario makes color, clothing, image all part of the story again, like when SPN is true to itself.
Andreas, who appears to have been the original poster, put them up on June 12. They could have been done right around the time filming on season seven ended (before Ackles grew his inter-season beard) or they could have been done months or a year ago. But as far as I know, they are “new” in the sense that they haven’t been released before.
Technically, nothing is from season eight, yet, because filming hasn’t begun on season eight. Whether these photos were intentionally meant to evoke the Purgatory cliffhanger is very much up in the air. I’m not sure that half of these photo shoots are meant to evoke anything specific on the show, or are designed by people who even watch the show. But it is possible that the timing of their release to Andreas (assuming he wasn’t holding on to them for months on end) was intended to evoke Purgatory.
Thanks for answering Paula. After thinking about it, I guess it doesn’t matter when they were shot, just when they’re released. Especially with their history of reusing old photos in new seasons.
It gives me some hope that Dean is on their minds. At least it would be something new, to plan an arc that has him in the story’s center. And they’re in desparate need of “new.”
They certainly are.
Look, trying to take anything from these photoshoots is always going to be dicey. We don’t know when they were taken or what the people setting it up had in mind. Ackles is in character as Dean, but he’s wearing his wedding ring. There’s no guarantee Dean will wear a black-brown jacket like that in season eight. Stuff like that. I mean, they had that damned snake from “Yellow Fever” photoshopped around Sam’s arm for two full seasons of promo shots. And the only time we ever saw the thing on the show was when it went down Dean’s leg in season four (partly because Padalecki outright admitted he couldn’t even stand to be in the same shot with a snake that big).
On the other hand, look at what we’ve got for spoilers so far: a few quotes with no context from Bob Singer about the upcoming season that were most likely uttered before the season finale came out and these shots. Yet, we’ve got people on the one hand taking what Singer said as gospel and willing to string him from the nearest tree because of it. And on the other hand, people are saying about the promo shots, “Now, hold on a minute, here! We don’t know the context. We don’t know who took these or when or if they really came from season eight.” As if we had any context from the Bob Singer article or never had the producers lie to us or get things wrong or accidentally give us the wrong impression. At least photos are something concrete that we can examine for ourselves.
Folks, *nothing* is yet from season eight. The season premiere won’t even start filming for another month. We won’t get Comic-Con for a month. And the first episode that’s going to be filmed will almost certainly be Dean-lite, because Ackles is directing it. Even then, that won’t start filming until July.
But if it’s significant that Ackles was in relatively little promotion last season, it’s definitely significant that he is doing his own photo shoot for the show. And everything points to that being for the show–from the fact he’s standing, acting and dressing like Dean to the fact that the person who originally put these up said they were SPN shots to the fact that there’s no other reason for him to be in that kind of setting. So, all that said, when is the last time Ackles did a solo photo shoot for SPN? Or even had photos released that made it seem like a solo photo shoot? This is a big deal for Dean fans. What does it mean? I don’t know, but I’ll have fun speculating about it until the next big spoiler comes out.
Paula, do you have any idea who this Andreas person is or why the photos would be released to him? I’ve not heard that name before.
Andreas is someone who has been around the fandom for a while–at least since season three or four. He’s involved in the industry in some way and has inside sources to photos from the show. But he’s never been particularly friendly to other fans (He demands a *lot* of egoboo). He used to have a site, but it got expensive for him and he started asking for donations to keep it going. When that didn’t work out, he moved to LJ and friends-locked his page. Now, it seems he’s on Tumblr and is no longer friends-locked. Possibly, that’s because people just spread out the photos he put out, anyway. Possibly, he’s mellowed.
Anyway, regardless of what you think of how he acts, he is very reliable for getting hold of info (especially photographic info) that no one else has and just setting it loose in the fandom. If he’s saying the photo shoot is for SPN (I put the link directly to his page in the column), I’d be very surprised if it were not.
I’d love to see Rick Worthy again, as I thought he was great. I’m not sure I want there to be another, greater foe – they’ve been pulling that chain for seasons now, and each so-called villan is worse than the one before. But I would relish seeing a cat and mouse game between Dean and the Alpha. Yeah. Feral Dean and ancient Alpha, playing games, killing lots of shit and being *really* scary.
Not much in the way of spoilers, but good ones from Rick Worthy. Does seem like the have a whole character plained out for the AV. And we know he is back next season becasue of his comment in TWBB. I’m wondering who the war is with. Must be Crowley. He’s the only big bad left after the levies.
Regarding Hall H: It’s the biggest room in the place, and usually reserved for movies, so for Supernatural to be in there is a big deal. And when I went last year, it was packed. The first show was Glee, then Supernatural, then Doctor Who, and surprisingly, very few people left from Glee to Supernatural to Doctor Who.
But regardless, it was my least favorite of the rooms. I think just because it was so dang dark in there. They had black curtains all around the room and it just felt claustrophobic and very closed in, even though I knew it was the biggest room. For viewing, it had nice screens and I got a seat towards the middle back but right in front of a screen, so that was nice. I just didn’t like the way the black curtains made the room feel. But hey, once the lights were down and the actors were on screen, it wasn’t so bad
I do love that they upgraded it to the big hall and that it filled enough (with people still waiting to get in) to continue to justify it. That’s pretty dang cool!
I agree with everyone though: we seriously need Carver to say something BEFORE Comic Con. This anticipation is painful and not in a good way. I think all of us Dean fans – especially after the Singer “Dean Who?” interview in TVG – could use some reassurance that our new overlord, I mean showrunner, values Dean as a lead character and acknowledges his importance!
I just have to wonder how that happened Dean and Cas got trapped in there. Was it Crowley that caused that? He can send anyone to Purgatory. Was it Roman’s last ditch effort to get even with Dean that he managed to drag him there with him? And Cass was way behind Roman. How could he grab both Dean and Cass? But both Dean and Cass are on bad terms with Crowley so, I can see him causing it. After all he had a big bone to pick with Cass after last year and once Dean killed Roman, Crowley really had no reason not to turn on Dean.
But how do they get out. It was a big deal to open the door before and then it let all the monsters out including the levies. Is it different with an angel inside making it’s easier to break out? Just trying to get an idea how the writers might work Dean and Cass out. But I really do not like the time jump again. Really it’s not needed.
All they need to do is have a third party who get in and out of Purgatory, like Alpha Vamp, can break them out and that can start a war with Crowley fast enough.
Or maybe someone else breaks them out and Crowley starts a war cause they are out and AV has to pick a side to be on. Course we always know Dean will win so yeah, he picks the boys.
I hope too that the ‘overlord’ does show us he realizes the worth of Dean and plans on building the story around him from now on. It does seem S8 is already planned out, so now is the time to state, honestly, if he plans to continuing focusing on Sam or doing what fans want and focusing on Dean.
I can tell you that no one will make any announcements until CC. They want to keep that a big event.
When was it stated that the Alpha Vamp could move in and out of Purgatory?
Hi cassieo! Yes it’s a head scratched. There are so many possibilities and it is unknown territory. There is no way Dean’s story will be ignored.
I just blasted through season 1 of being human. I really liked it. A positive quality is that the three main characters are all focused on equally. This was also a negative in that aidan’s s1 story had more meat. Sally’s season 1 arc could have been more concise. Same for josh- I didn’t think showing his family added much. We know he was estranged as acresylr of his condition. I think his relationship with nora spoke volumes about his mental state and isolation and it would have been better to expand that. A big plus is that the character development and their relationships with each other are really well done.
In other words, we might start to see a good Sam.
I am not sure that Crowley sent them. Why would he be able to send anyone to purgatory? If he can click his fingers and send people anywhere… sounds Angelish to me. He told Sam that God weapons usually have a kick. Both cas and Dean were in the pulsating wave prior to the explosion. It seems to me their transport wad related to the kill.
Getting them out will be interesting. The fact Crowley took kevin suggests there is more word which may give instructions. I think ash could possibly do it. Maybe an archangel. Maybe death. Opening the door per season s6 would be hit or miss.
Who knows?
I have no idea how the alpha vamp figures in. I doubt that he can pop in and out. Remember how difficult it was to get Eve out? He has a lot of reason to hate Crowley. I agree with paula… I also thought I bet he’s Egyptian. Of course that could be anne rice influencing me more than logic (African ancient culture).
Glad you liked season 1. I think season 2 is even better. But I’ll wait to you’ve seen it to say anything. As for Sam, that would be a blessing. No question Carver has the right stuff, but with BH it was just he and his wife. And they are on the Scy-Fy channel which is much more geared to adults then the CW is. And teens LOVE to see an adult be immature and snub authority. So if Carver can change that and control Edlund and Singer he will have his second success as a showrunner. (fingers and toes crossed)
Yeah, your right, I guess it was the backlash of the weapon or something Roman did to get one last bit of revenge it. And I forgot about Kevin. Course he is a prophet of God so that alone would make him interesting to Crowley and if any other tablet ever showed up, another garrison of angels would be sent for it, so don’t know how Kevin or AV fits into it. But I’m glad Worthy is back next season. I do like his character and he plays him so well. I really hope his familiar is gone though. With SG gone I’d like to see more respect for woman in the series.
And I just don’t see why time has to pass for this to work. Maybe it will only be a few weeks, but I wanted it to pick up right where they left off. Dean looking shocked, creepy critters running around in the dark and Cass gone….but only for a short time.
I just hope they don’t have Sam saving Dean. Dean is the strong one. He can get himself out. Sam can be trying to save Kevin. That should keep him busy for a while.
Forgot to say, good catch on Death. Death could get Sam’s soul out of the cage so he can certainly go in and out of Purgatory. And he always has a fondness for Dean. Cass should be able to call him, but really he probably will only answer Dean. That is a really good idea. And I like Death too!
Sorry for the typos. I am amazed my meaning was clear.
Perhaps the time jump is for Sam since time in purgatory probably runs differently much as hell time did. Just a thought courtesy of those proverbial Dean goggles. I think the future’s so bright we’re going to need shades! (Always hated that song but the phrase is apropos). I really have no idea where they will go except that Dean and cas will get out and likely be changed for the badass. Maybe a black leather duster for cas?
Do you watch justified? We loved s1-2 and I hear Bobby figures mightily in 3.
OMG! That’s another one of my favorite shows. And yes Beaver is in it. He’s also going to be in the next season, though how much isn’t know as he is also in SPN. Have you watched Deadwood? That is another phenomenal series with Timothy Olyphant and Beaver. It was on HBO for 2 seasons. If you ever get the chance, watch it.
Have not seen deadwood. Will add it to the Netflix queue. My husband and I are both from hillbilly southern states although we grew up in cities and not hollows. Still besides the excellent writing and acting (Gabriel in s2 was amazing); we love the attention to regional accents and speech. My husband still talks that way. I spent time up north and in the Midwest so I have lost mine more or less most of the time. It is sobering to remember I grew up singing Dixie in school. Yikes!
You mentioned Kristen Hager as being a regular for “season four”, but Being Human is only going into its third season.
Sorry, I meant season three. I’ll correct it.
Trying to catch up with everything. Thank you for the spoilers, ladies, and for the info about Jensen being nominated for The Portals again, Ginger. I’ve always liked and respected their choices of nominees. YAY! Jensen!
Oh, and those new promo pics?…*SWOOOOOOOOOOOON*…
A long wait until Comic Con. Hope it holds more good things and spoilery for Dean(and JA) and his fans this year than it has in the last two…*fingers crossed*…
A month to go until Comic Con, but I’m going to be paying close attention to Carver to see what he plans for Dean. I’m hoping someone asks him the real questions and that he doesn’t try to be cleverly vague with his answers:
1) Will Dean have a storyline this year?
2) Have the 2Js signed on for more years (or asks the J2s that)
3) Will the budget be increased, since the show is moving to
Wednesdays?
4) What are his hopes/plans for the series?
I’m also going to be curious as to whether Carver interacts with the J2s; unlike last year when SG and JA didn’t even look at each other during the panel.
JA said in an Upfront interview that he was going to be stopping in LA on his way back and talk with Carver (Could be those photos were taken then). I hope he did touch base with him and they had an honest, in-depth discussion about Dean’s character and where it should go.
@Lily
Yeah, I was pretty shocked they put it right out there. I mean, that was the literal go-to-credits cliffhanger for the season and they blew it right out of the water. Nice big spoiler, there, Syfy! Stay classy!
I don’t know the particulars of the Netflix deal, but when the music is replaced like that (The same thing happens on TNT, sometimes, especially with the famous “Bad Moon Rising” season one cliffhanger), it means they didn’t get the rights to play it in that particular format. It sucks, but it happens a lot because the record companies have been screwing everybody they possibly can for music rights in the past decade or so. It’s likely the WB or Netflix, or whoever had to cough up the dough for the rights, didn’t want to this time. Or the rights may no longer have been available. That happens, too. Rights-holders just plain change their minds.
There are a couple of shows, like Tour of Duty and WKRP in Cincinnati, that were put out dirt-cheap with none of their original music. Despite the fact that I *love* both of those shows, I refuse to get them like that. The original music was too integral to them for it to work. They even cut chunks out of WKRP at points where they couldn’t excise the music from the scene.
@Ginger
Ackles seems pretty cheerful this hiatus, so I’m hoping that’s a good sign. Who knows if your questions will be answered, of course, though we’ll have a pretty good idea of how things are between Ackles and Carver.
Thanks for the spoilers Paula! I do like the leather jacket, but I also hope the purgatory storyline is going to span a few episodes. Being Human looks interesting, and the Nora spoiler was surprising.
I have a question I would appreciate an answer to from the board. Why is is the classic rock music missing in the Supernatural episodes on Netflix? I was watching season one and the music was so bad. I never realized how much the music really contributed to the feel of the show until it was replaced with pretty lame numbers which ruined some really good scenes.
Thank you for responding to my Netflix question. I checked out a few episodes and it Looks like season one was the only one which had the classic rock replaced with lame music. Go figure!
The season with the most music? Figures.
